Occupational exposure is one of
the primary ways a person can become exposed to asbestos. However,
many people who did not work directly with asbestos have been
exposed. For example, people working with or around products
containing asbestos may bring the fibers home on their clothing
thereby exposing other family members.
There are hundreds of Pacific
Northwest and West Coast jobsites where asbestos products were
widely used. Many of our clients were exposed to asbestos while
serving in the Navy or while working in shipyards or at other
major industrial sites like power plants, pulp and paper mills,
oil refineries, aluminum plants, steel mills, and chemical plants.
There are literally thousands of different industrial sites
where asbestos products were used. Additionally, until the late
1970s asbestos was often incorporated into joint compounds and
ceiling and wall textures, products that were widely used in
commercial and residential construction and even home remodeling
projects. Finally, asbestos was also contained in certain automotive
brake linings and clutches.
